Hey, if you're here, you like Canadian music. Cool beans! This list is by no means comprehensive; these are just bands that I know and like. What's wrong with American radio stations, anyway, not giving the majority of these bands air play? If you know them from American radio airplay, consider yourself very lucky! (Hope you Canadians aren't offended by my graphic I was just trying to expand on the theme here, no disrepect intended!)
I am looking to acquire (especially on CD but any format's ok) anything by Rupert Hine (esp. "The Wildest Wish To Fly"), Eight Seconds, Images in Vogue, Tall New Buildings, and so on. If you have anything like this that you would like to unload, mail me and we can talk.
I have to admit that I haven't been near enough to Canada in a while to keep this as up to date as I'd like. So, please forgive me if a link is broken.
Encyclopedia of Canadian Rock, Pop & Folk Music Very nice as far as being the mother of all sources, but Images in Vogue is conspicuously absent (scores points, though, for info on Eight Seconds and Platinum Blonde).
And speaking of those spun-sugarhaired devils, there's a site up for devotees of Platinum Blonde. I'll admit it, I have a copy of "Alien Shores"...
Corky and the Juice Pigs You'll know them best from their appearances on the Fox series Mad TV or the airplay their song "Truckers" got on Dr. Demento. I however I am proud to say that I have owned their self-titled cd since its debut (or shortly thereafter). I'm so glad they're getting some recognition in the States, at last!
Moxy Früvous Live Noise, their live album (duh), is excellent. Then again, I've seen them live more times than I could probably count, so I'm probably slightly biased. Figures, the ONE show they did in Buffalo that I missed is the one that gets taped.
Barenaked Ladies: Gordon's Place See them live, get drowned in orange macaroni and cheese powder . . . only then have you really lived.
Spirit of The West My favourites are Faithlift and Open Heart Symphony
The Waltons
They're just outstanding. Please oh please, come to the Pacific Northwest!!!!
ObWaltonFact: At a show in the Fillmore (San Francisco)
in August '95 with the BNL, I was the (only) one who shouted out
when they mentioned the album "cock's crow", to which one of them
(I'm pretty sure it was Jason) said, "Um, you see we bring our mom
on tour with us . . ." I thusly became dubbed The
Waltons' Mom by my friends.
Rush OK, perhaps out of place in the company of these bands, they are awesome nonetheless.
Sarah McLachlan What a marvelous voice. This is the official site!
54-40 Hootie and the Blowfish's remake of "I Go Blind" would have familiarized you with at least one of their songs. Here's the official site, done in typical 54-40 style!
Crash Test Dummies the official site for this fabulously talented group. There's also an exceptionally done fan site, but I don't think it's been updated in a while.
Blue Rodeo extremely comprehensive and official site for this really great band!
Tragically Hip! Who recently played Eugene OR (where I live) but I couldn't go. :(
The Odds no, not the video game, but the band whose video for "Heterosexual Man" featured The Kids In The Hall. I have their first two CDs and love them! This page is a little graphics intensive, and has a scrolling java banner, so beware!
The Pursuit Of Happiness "I'm an Adult Now" continues to be my personal anthem (well, most of the time, anyhow).
Meryn
Cadell Most famous (or infamous) for her hit "The Sweater", she's
VERY talented, and her music, though stinging at times, is brilliant.
The Northern Pikes
I didn't know they broke up. Bummer.
Shannon Hale's site disappeared, and I can't find it! Pout.
Know of any existing sites for Canadian bands? Mail me with the subject header "How could you possibly have forgotten about Gowan?!?" or something like that. (I'll get the jist.) And please send me a URL if you know of one. Mille Grazie. (Let me make it clear that I don't link bands I'm not familiar with. This is a page about music that I like. Perhaps a bit egotistical, but if I don't know it, why in the world would I put it on my page?)
