um, wow.

It's been a while since I wrote anything here, but I just don't seem to have the time, and am not inclined to be so public with life details anymore. Anyway. Happy 2008!

Biggest news of last year was that I got a new job in July. Back in tech support for corporate customers instead of consumers. It's weird to be doing it again, but it pays very well and has good benefits, and that goes a long way. Actually, if anyone's looking for a job in support, let me know--my department is hiring.

Moved again Sept. 2006, then got a kitten in October 2006. She's going to be 2 in March, April, or thereabouts. Still have the older girls, too, which is weird, because they're like 13 and 12. Kitten keeps them on their toes. Speaking of the cats, about a year ago one of the older cats almost died because of a dental-related infection. She had to have about 6 teeth extracted including her upper two canines, but at least we didn't lose her. She kind of looks like a bulldog now with her lower canines protruding though. It's cute.

Well... I can't think of anything else to say. Until next time!

happy new year!

It is truly hard to believe that it is 2007 already. I mean, wasn't I just a junior in high school? It's difficult to believe that Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali and Freddie Mercury have been dead for ~20 years.

I would like to first of all apologize to all my friends (esp. Thierry) for not being so good about keeping in touch. I owe so many of you emails (again, esp. Thierry) and I am going to try to get caught up as soon as I can. Know that I think of you all often and feel bad that I'm such a lousy friend. I don't make resolutions as a rule mostly because it's a setup for disappointment, but I will try to be better.

'06 wasn't a great year, but it wasn't bad. It saw me getting off the phones and into another department at work--but it was a lateral move with no pay raise (I'm still grateful to not be on the phone). It saw us moving out of a crappy house into a much nicer one, and acquiring a new cat who's a sweetheart but a disturber of fecal matter (i.e. shit disturber). It also saw me starting to write again, which is good, but I haven't been doing any art. It saw me gaining back some of the weight I'd lost, which is a huge bummer.

Ah well. Here's to new beginnings.

Heya

Well, it sure has been a long time. Mostly I'm surfacing to say that my qwest.net email address seems to have died a horrible death. So if you really need to get in touch with me, substitute 'qwest.net' with 'comcast.net'. (I changed the link in the sidebar, as well.)

Points of interest, in no particular order:

So, kiddies, be good! =)

up for air

Hey.

I know I owe quite a few people emails... things are busy, it is hot, work is okay but it gets tiring. Just a Hi to let you know I haven't forgotten about you and you know who you are. :)

heya

Again with the months between posts. Sheesh.

1.) It snowed here today. 0.5". They closed the local school district. It melted by 10 am. (I know this ain't Wester New York, but still. Wimps.)

2.) Same old, same old. Still working the same job. An's still working in local theater, may be going back to school. Cats are v. good. The living room is in fact presently littered with sleeping cat bodies. :)

3.) I have an iPod now. (The Shuffle was defective and got returned for a refund.) I looooooove it. :D I have soooo much music on it, and it is maybe a quarter full.

4.) I love having paid time off. I have never called in sick (::knocks on wood::) so I have accumulated quite a bit, to the envy of my co-workers. So occasionally I will take a planned day off, like this upcoming Monday.

5.) Thank you, Thierry, for the postcard and letter. I have been so headachy lately that I don't have it in me to sit and write emails. I'm such a lame friend; thanks for putting up with me. Everybody.

the closing of the year

It's hard to believe that it's that time of year again. I did not get out many paper cards nor did I do an electronic card here, and I feel kinda bad about it, but I hope everyone understands. You were all in some way in my thoughts, friends and family alike.

Been so busy. Wish I had more time to help get the café closed down. Will spend time on Friday helping to scrub it down (note to self: bring cleaning gloves on Friday).

We don't celebrate Christmas as the Christian religious holiday, but we did spend the day in the company of good friends and great food (I think that the concept of a Morrocan feast for Christmas dinner is one of the best ever had). Being that it fell on Sunday meant I had to work the next day, even though it was dead as a doornail at work. (The people who did call in pretty much unanimously said, "Why are you there today??") We don't do big ticket present items amongst friends, but it was a good gift exchange nonetheless. I think the gifts we gave were well-received. I am still waiting for my new (mega-discounted!) iPod Shuffle to arrive. (Hee!) The leather Palm Zire case I bought for An was clearly designed by people who had never actually seen one in person, and has yet to be returned, possibly next week after things die down. :P

...because this week has been dress rehearsal and last minute craziness, as this weekend is The Barber of Seville with the Eugene Opera, for which An is wardrobe mistress. We will likely get comp tickets (must remember opera glasses this time). All I will be able to think about is Bugs Bunny. Then the yearly cookie party for New Year's. We are going to try to make low carb chocolate chip cookies.

I have been finding some time to get creative, and that's good.

It's frightening to think my 20 year reunion is in 2.5 years. Eeeek. How did I get to be this old?

end of an era

After much thought and many years of effort, it saddens me to say that tomorrow is the last day the café will be open; today was the last full day of business. It was a lot of work with very little pay; we weren't making fistfuls of money, so it wasn't completely unexpected, but the people are marvelous (customer and co-worker alike) and I'll miss it being there.

I spent today helping around the place, evaluating what to sell the computers for and canceling utilities. Tomorrow we're having a party / wake for all of the regular customers from noon to 5 or 6. I must remember to bring the camera.

Does anyone know of a place one might be able to get a low-cost web hosting (or a domain redirector/alias/whatever it's called) so we park the café domain? Once the DSL goes off, the site will go down (we hosted the site on our server), and I'd like to see it stay up if only to announce we're closed.. :P

time delay

What's this? A post? You may fall down in shock now. If anyone bothers to check this site any more. I'm not sure I would, if I were you. I mean, jeez. August?

Things have not changed much. I work 8 am - 4:30 pm every weekday, still have 2 cats, still live in the same crazy, stupid house. I'm coming up on my one year anniversary at work, which is more than a little scary. I just turned 35, which -- it's hard to process, thinking things from when I was 14-turning-15 (like Live Aid and Simon le Bon's boat disaster) was over 20 years ago. And a 20 year reunion coming up in a few that I'm not sure I want to go to if the people I want to see aren't going to be there.

I took today off on a long birthday weekend, and spent most of it cleaning, which seems to be the story of my life. My intentions were to sit and play "Myst V" all day. Or watch "Lost" on AVI files (I love my DVD player). I think I am too grown up and responsible. (I realized that I have had this computer about a year now. Wow.)

If you could spare a few thoughts for my youngest nephew, I would appreciate it. He has been having seizures with no apparent cause, and the last two, he stopped breathing. A baby that's only 8 months old should not have had three spinal taps under his belt.

spooky

Earlier tonight, I was watching "City Confidential" on A&E. It was a story about a college student who'd been murdered. During the course of the show, the satellite signal dropped and the picture went still several times.

This unfortunate loss of signal also occurred while a closeup shot of what was probably a yearbook photo of the murder victim was being shown, her face filling the screen... a bright broadcast blue horizontal bar striped just under her eyes, the calm, lower-case phrase "no signal" in white just under her right eye.

I was a bit creeped out.

weekend, at last

Had to work last weekend, then the first full week back for about 3 weeks (between requested time off and holiday), so this past week seemed extraordinarily long. Hello Saturday, I love you.

An recently had a minor tangle with the employment department (an audit claimed that she owed a lot of money back), but we dug up evidence to the contrary and now it is all settled, and in fact, they told her to file a new claim to cover a time period that originally wasn't covered. Yay!

S'pose I should get moving today, already.

bad news, good news

The bad news: she did not get the job.

The good news: HR called to break the news, almost apologizing that she was the only other candidate in the running, and that it made for a very difficult decision (two business days later than they'd intended) and oh, um, *digs toe into ground*, maybe she'd be interested in being contacted for a slightly lower position that's coming open on August 1st?

So she said yes, of course. :) Silver linings, and all that, seeing as they start their phone techs at roughly twice what I'm making now per hour.

Hoping that soon it will be the end of a labourious ride in a two-oar dinghy, moving up to at least a boat with an outboard motor. :)

that sound you hear

*boom today*

I raised my karma points yesterday by helping a woman get her shiny new iBook connected to the internet through Airport. She was so incredibly grateful. It really made me feel happy and proud to do something that simple and so important for this stranger.

update

They (prospective job) called to ask for references on Tuesday. We are taking this as a good sign. If we don't get word before the weekend I may just explode into flames!

Trader Joe's is evil. They are evil because they make a Mediterranean cheese-style yogurt, which is absolutely amazing with some Simple Syrup and fresh blueberries.
