Lots going on, not enough time to write about it. Been going through a saga and a half trying to find a hard drive that will fit in my computer that's larger than 2 gig. Actually, it's been harder finding out what is in my computer, so that I can figure out what I need to get. Humpf. I've been vacillating between "Damn it I should just get a new computer..." to "I can't because I'd have to replace all of my peripherals" and "if I do then I can't get a portable...". eBay would be the place to shop but DAMN... I hate the waiting. I would rather just buy it and be done with it, if I can just find a drive that's the right format and a BIG size and not cost like $500. Sigh. I love my Power Mac but they don't make it easy or cheap to upgrade it!
Been a peaceful couple of weeks without the boy around (Björn, boycat, who went to live with our friend Amy). Discovered today when I took the case off of my computer (to check whether or not the drive bay could accept a full-height hard drive) that the dumbass had PEED on it! A goooood reason to keep the case on your box.
Eugene Celebration was ok. Much less foot traffic this year = we didn't make as much as I'd hoped.
Ah well...
11 September 2000
Ugh, where is the time going? Hm, this reminds me that tomorrow is my long-lost friend's birthday. Sigh. Deb's was on Friday (loser me forgot to write to her). Everyone's turning 30. And I'm next on Age's hit list, among my friends.
Had a great Labour Day weekend. Took a drive down to the San Francisco Bay area to visit lots of friends. Of course, we lost two whole days in travelling. It's a long drive to San Jose...
We did, however, do lots of fun stuff. On Friday (9/1), after driving for forever and a day, and getting stuck in horrendous rush hour/holiday traffic on 680, we ate at an excellent Chinese restaurant with a bunch of Andra's friends from on line. The food was great: it's a good sign in a Chinese restaurant when a lot of the customers appear to be Chinese! The people, whom I did not know at all, were very nice and very welcoming to me and my utter cluelessness about the Pern universe.
On Saturday (9/2), we took Caltrain to San Francisco for the day. Met one of the couple from the previous night's dinner for lunch and kicking about. During the course of the day we used almost every form of public transport available in the city! We found ourselves travelling from Fisherman's Wharf to Chinatown. Oooooh, boy. Dangerous, dangerous place, Chinatown. I came away from Chinatown having spent wayyyy too much. Now I have an incentive to lose some more weight, so that I can fit into my beautiful new hand embroidered Chinese dress. :)
Hm, what else... oh! How could I have almost forgotten about Saturday night's party at Steven's! Imagine, if you will, a party populated by Jacks from Will and Grace. Okay, not quite that bad. But you get the picture. It was screamingly fun though!
Sunday (9/3) found us kicking around the San Jose area, meeting up with excellent friend Tay for coffee. We were also trying to locate an excellent Japanese store all weekend, and we thought we had found it, but after arriving there, it was just a Japanese/Asian food grocery store. Not that we didn't find good stuff there, but it's not the store we were looking for. Then that evening, to dinner with gracious hosts Sharon and Jerry at the White Cockade. It's one of my favourite places to visit while down there. Unfortunately could not hook up with friends Polly and Jordan, though. We really wanted to!
Monday (9/4) was a looooong damned day. Pit stop in Oakland to do a favour for a friend, and almost got lost. That city has TERRIBLE signage for getting back on the freeway the right way! I was convinced we were going to go off the into the water before we found the on ramp! Then a pitstop for The Olive Pit to pick up lunch and a jar of garlic stuffed olives. YUM. We finally made it home like 11 hours later... I wonder if more of the drive home is uphill? It took us much less than that to get there, like... 8.5 hours, and that's not counting the hour spent in hellacious traffic. That's a pretty HUGE discrepancy, even taking the side trip and the Olive Pit stop into consideration. (Maybe the aliens got us.)
We hit rainstorms in both directions (what is it with people in cars whipping around trucks on curvy, wet roads, and wind, and...). The drive back though afforded us a gorgeous view of Mount Shasta. WOW. All the other hills pale in comparison to this magnificent mountain. It's like... all of a sudden, the hills seemingly part, and there it is, larger than anything else in sight, looming up into the sky with its snow covered top. I don't understand how something like this could not possibly be humbling. I felt like an ant. Once you see it too, it stays with you for miles and miles, until finally, it's behind you again. Having grown up on the east coast, I had never seen a mountain like this one before. It's utterly breathtaking.
Rough week after coming back... five days jammed into four, and this upcoming weekend, Eugene Celebration. All I can remember is last year, trying to haul two boxes of two gallons of milk (each) three or so blocks, through the parade, to get it here. If I have anything to say about it, that will not happen again this year! We already have plans to stock up on milk! :)
What else... oh, after 2+ years, we had to find a new home for Bjorn. He was just not getting on well with the girls, and he was starting to drive us crazy with his antics. Don't worry though. He's gone to a loving home with a lady who absolutely adores cats. She will take good care of him.
Hm, this one's kind of long. :)
