… and a happy new year!

May 2004 find you all happy, well, prosperous and loved.

If I cannot bring you comfort
then at least I bring you hope
for nothing is more precious
than the time we have and so
we all must learn from small misfortune
count the blessings that are real
let the bells ring out for christmas
at the closing of the year
let the bells ring out for christmas
at the closing of the year

from the song "The Closing of the Year",
Written by Trevot Horn/Bruce Woolley,
from the Toys motion picture soundtrack

merry christmas, happy hanukkah, blessed solstice

This time of year is so hectic, yet at the same time spawns much reflection on the impending end of another year. Looking back on 2003 I'd have to say it was another challenging year, but the outlook going into 2004 is definitely brighter. We're actually paying bills on time — okay, so there's not much left over when all's said and done, but it's a definite plus to not be constantly 2 months behind on everything.

Later today, I will be taking a resumé and application down in an attempt to get on at the same company An works at. I'm torn between going for Customer Service or Tech Support. Customer Service I am really good at; Tech Support seems big and scary. However, An says that I already know a heck of a lot more than some of the newbie techs know when they first get hired. Tech Support also makes $2 an hour more than Customer Service. I'm torn. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I also have made zero inroads for holiday gifts. Very little time, very little money, a combination of which is pretty fatal for gift-making or -giving. Yes, I know, it's Christmas Eve. An and I have an idea for a collaborative effort that we could conceivably start tonight but probably not finish, so they will have to be late. I didn't even make an online holiday card like I've done in the past. But ya know? I refuse to be too stressed about this. The holidays are supposed to be a joyful, pleasant time.

I plan on using my four days off in a row to do some reading, possibly writing up some holiday cards (ah, so they're late. They just extend the holiday, right?), and definitely some sleeping. Possibly compiling a CD that I promised a friend, since that seems like an enjoyable thing to do.

So wherever you are and whatever you do? I hope you are surrounded by love and the peace of the season.

new frames, and an open letter to the universe

For the first time in five years I've got an eye exam, and it's tomorrow. The exciting and frustrating part of this is the choosing of the new frames. I really like the frames I have for being made of super-light titanium and not having any tiny screws that can fall out, but the years (and the chemicals in hair dye) have taken their toll on these poor things, so it is time to choose anew. An and I went to Costco on Monday night to try some on, since I have to go to the appointment alone and I can't choose frames by myself because duh, I can't see myself in them. I have it narrowed down to three or four, so we will see what the insurance will cover and what can be afforded.

Also:

Dear Universe:
I would either like a.) more time or b.) more money (preferably b.), but with no tragedy (such as death or disaster) involved in order for this small fortune to be delivered to me). Thank you.
Signed,
sandra

wow, december already?!

Wah! Where does the time go?

My Thanksgiving weekend was great, save for the actual ground travel from my town to Portland. Massive volume of traffic on the way up caused me to make it to Albany in 2 hours instead of 40 minutes. I nearly missed my plane, and would have in fact missed it if not for the fact that they were delayed in boarding. I got to the gate five minutes before scheduled departure. Whew.

On the way home, a fatal car accident right near where I-5 meets I-205 forced a closure of I-5 in both directions, so my roommate (who'd come with me instead of Greyhound because Greyhound has this thing about birds on the bus) and I bought a map at the Fred Meyers right there and figured out how to get to Route 99. Routes always take longer than freeways because the speed limits are usually lower, the roads slightly more treacherous and curvy and not as well lit, and pass slowly through small towns. All of that coupled with my crappy night vision and it took me almost 5 hours to get home (when it should have taken two and a half).

But I had a lovely time bonding with my niece and my nephews (one more than the other, since one is just a baby). I did things I hadn't done since I was a kid: drawing Disney figures, playing with dolls. Watched more Power Rangers in one day than I've ever seen before, ever. I miss them already. Mind you, I'm content with being the aunt and not the mom, because at the end of the day, when I'm tired of kids, I can give them back. :)

is this just not enough…?
